IN 2012, MANIPUR WORST HIT BY TERROR


Manipur is worst affected by militancy in the country, overtaking J&K and other northeastern states. Mizoram and Tripura are among the most peaceful states. Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, minister of state for home Jitendra Singh said 246 militancy-related incidents occurred in Manipur in the first three months of 2012. During that period, 34 such incidents occurred in J&K.

This year, 21 militants, five security personnel and seven civilians were killed in Manipur. J&K recorded killings of six militants and four civilians. In the other northeastern states, militancy-related incidents decreased from 424 in 2009 to 251 in 2010. In 2011, there were 145 incidents and 26 till March 2012.

Violence by militants is on the rise in Meghalaya. In 2009, there were 12 such incidents, 29 in 2010 and 56 in 2011. In the first three months of 2012, 35 such incidents occurred. Only one incident was reported in Tripura this year. In 2009, there were 19 incidents of militant violence in Tripura, 30 in 2010 and 13 in 2011. No such incident has occurred in Mizoram since 2010. In 2009, there was one such incident in Mizoram. In Nagaland, the number of incidents declined from 129 in 2009 to 64 in 2010, 61 in 2011 and 37 so far in 2012. Arunachal does not have militant outfits, but groups from neighbouring Assam and Nagaland operate in the state.

Meetei Mayek : a brief history

The burning of vital historical documents or the Puyas of Kangleipak (Manipur) written in Meetei Mayek during the reign of King Pamheiba in the early 18th century, made the effort all the more difficult. The earliest use of Meetei Mayek is dated between 11th and 12th centuries AD. A stone inscription found at Khoibu in Tengnoupal district contains royal edicts of Kiyamba - this was the beginning of Chietharol Kumbaba - the Royal Chronicle of Manipur. According to the very few Puyas that survived, such as, Wakoklon Thilel Salai Singkak, Wakoklol Thilel Salai Amailon, Meetei Mayek comprised of 18 alphabets. THE SEARCH AND MAKING OF A CHIEF MINISTER

Out of the 53 seats, 30 seats were for the valley, 18 seats for the hills, 3 seats for the Muslims and 2 seats for the professional groups. In the election that followed, Krishak Sabha won 6 seats, Congress 14 seats, Prajashanti 12 seats and 18 seats were won by the Hill men. Praja Shanti formed a coalition Govt with the support of the Krishak Sabha and the Hillmen. In the given situation Maharaja Bodhachandra Singh did not even confide his own brother, MK Priyobarta Singh who was a potential claimant to the post of Chief Minister.
